When I first heard that another rendition of Peter Pan was being released, I must admit I was a bit skeptical. I thought, just how many versions of Peter Pan can be created? I mean, we have the original Peter Pan released in 1953 featuring Bobby Driscoll and Kathryn Beaumont. We have the 1960 release of Peter Pan featuring Mary Martin & Cyril Ritchard. Who can forget the 1991 release of Hook (a personal favorite) featuring Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts and Robin Williams. We also have the 2003 version of Peter Pan featuring Jeremy Sumpter and Jason Isaacs. Then we have the 2004 rendition of Peter Pan called Finding Neverland, starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. To my shocking surprise, there was also a TV show released in the UK called Neverland which starred Kiera Knightly; however, the mini-series only survived one season.
Needless to say, when I heard that Pan was coming out this summer - I was very curious as to just how directors would make this movie different from the rest. I went into that movie theatre thinking it was going to be just another rendition of the same old story, with the same old characters, and the same old villains. I could not have been more wrong. The Story
The movie Pan (2015) is a prequel to the actual story of Peter Pan and Hook. This movie is illustrating the history of Peter Pan and Captain Hook before they knew who each other were. It goes pretty far back. For example, the movie begins by introducing Peter as a baby, being lovingly left by the door of an orphanage while sleeping in some form of basket. I so appreciated that we are introduced to Peter at this young age, because it truly sets the story for who he becomes and why.
The movie is all about believing in yourself and believing in your destiny. I don't know about everyone else, but I left the movie theatre feeling encouraged and empowered! The Characters
The main and supporting characters of Pan (2015) were stellar! The young boy Peter, played by Levi Miller, was engaging and authentic in his delivery! I was so impressed with him! At such a young age, he was captivating and put so much emotion behind every single word. Hugh Jackman never ceases to amaze me. He is a powerhouse and takes this movie to a whole new level. Combining his vocal talents with his strong and powerful acting ability creates the perfect Blackbeard character. Lastly, I want to give a shout out to that stud muffin Garrett Hedlund who plays Hook before he was ever a captain.
This cast is joined by a number of supporting actors whose chemistry is almost palpable. I have to give kudos to whomever chose this specific cast of actors. What a great job they did pinpointing their characters! The Music
If you are a lover of good music, you will undoubtably notice that Pan (2015) is filled with great artists. I cannot wait for the soundtrack to be released. None of the music was inappropriate, and you can rest easy knowing that you shouldn't be hearing any foul language or suggestive innuendoes.
In Conclusion
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I know that others may have very strong opposing opinions, but in a world where good wholesome family movies are few and far between - this one is definitely one to watch.
